Contains the following types of materials: photographs, photo albums. Covers the following time period: 1861-1904. Contains photographs of the following military units and organizations: West Point Cadets, United States Military Academy (USMA). General description of the collection: West Point albums photograph collection includes West Point albums 1861, 1866, 1875, 1880, 1886, 1891, 1903, 1904. Each contains photographs of professors and graduating cadets; some of the latter contain, as well, photos of the grounds and buildings of the USMA and cadet training and other activities at the Point. In numerous cases not all cadets of a class are pictured because these albums were made up individually for the cadet who purchases it and he had put in it those of his classmates who were his friends and close associates. In some cases there is more than one album for a given date, some containing the same photos and some having photos the other does not have. Most of the photos in each of the albums are formal bust shot poses of the professors and cadets.

West Point, N.Y., was originally utilized as a strategic defense location during the American Revolution. West Point is geographically located on a 100 ft. plateau overlooking the Hudson River. After the American victory Congress created a Corps of Invalids (veterans) that were transferred to West Point for the purpose of instructing candidates for commission.
